It was designed as an affordable folding knife intended for export to Germany's colonial markets, particularly in Africa.

2019 – Present

In the mid-20th century, production of the Okapi knife moved from Germany to South Africa, where it remains a staple tool to this day. Manufactured by Okapi South Africa, the knife has become deeply ingrained in South African culture - especially in rural and working-class communities - valued for its rugged build and low cost.
